In the last days before ASOM, you will get an email with your starting times for ASOM. As orienteering is an individual sport, everybody will start at an individual starting time so it is all up to you on how to navigate through the city.
Arrive on time
On the day of the event, make sure you arrive on time at the event center, because it might be possible the start is not directly at the event center and you still need to go a while to get to the starting point.
When arriving at the event center there will be a registration area where number-bibs, time chips (EMIT-System), course information, etc will be handed over to the runners.
There will be a stand where the use of the EMIT (time chip) is explained and where you can practice the best way for you to punch a control. For example a bad use of the EMIT, when punching the controls, can give a time-loss of 3 seconds per control. Given around 20 controls in the course, that means that you can lose up to one minute, just by having a ‘bad method’ to punch the controls.
Don't loose track of time
After the registration is complete, you need to keep an eye on the time and go to START in time considering your starting time. At the START you need to enter the starting box when your time appears on the big clock and your number or name will be announced. From this point it will take at least two minutes until you get your map and your race-time starts.
From this moment the main goal is to find all controls on the map in the right order as soon as possible. Running fast is crucial for a good race, but making no mistakes might even be more important.
After having a great race where time flew by you’ll be (hopefully) arriving at the finish area. The second last control is at the beginning of the ‘finish lane’, to get to the last control you need to follow the tapes and the corridor to sprint to the last control. The time will be stopped when punching the control which is marked on the map with the double circle.
After this last control it is very important to go to the Time-Check computer. The computer will calculate the time and if all controls were checked in the right direction. You just need to follow the directions of the staff on where to go and it will be clear where the checkout area is.
